I'm a Balleriiiiina!
I must say that I am a wonderful ballerina. Really, I am. Well, I did really well today, at least. We learned a new thing, and I was good at it, yay! Even when we turned it into a turn, I didn't fall or wobble or anything! I started out a little shaky when we practiced pirouettes, but then I got the hang of it (I think). So, success! Also, things she was correcting today (to the whole class) were not things I was doing wrong, so it was nice. :) :) :)

Well, Okay...
Ballet today was a lot better. I'm starting to pick up that tricky step, and I'm a lot better on the other parts. Also, I made a new friend. Rather, she made me. She talks quite a lot, but she's a nice enough girl. So ballet's looking up, and for the first time in a while, I'm not thinking about dropping (which is good, because today's the last day to drop a class!). Our instructor's still mean, but it wasn't to me today. It's nice that it's not just to me. I've been having these chest pains for a few days, but not on the side where my heart is. I mention this because it just now happened again, and I don't like it!

Back to Terrible
Oh dear, dear. I'm back to terrible (as I assume you surmised from the title of this particular post). We added yet more to the combination, but she didn't take much time to go over the new moves. We had to split up into two groups to practice so she could see us better, which was MORTIFYING. But then when it was my turn to watch, I noticed that a lot of the other girls were having trouble, too. Not as much as I was, but still! So maybe she'll go over it a lot more next time. The Ballet II girls (oh yes, we're really two classes squished into one room) were wonderful and looked like real live ballerinas! That gives me a little bit of hope sort of. Oh well. I'll just blame it on the fact that I had a bad reaction to an antibiotic recently and I'm still not quite over it. Almost, but not quite. So that must be it!

Success!
Today, I was ten times better at ballet! I don't know why, but I like it. My toes don't hurt, I didn't get laughed at, and I wasn't any worse than anybody else! Also, it was fun. We learned more in our combination, including a couple of jumps. I panicked when the maintenance men came in to clean up a puddle on the floor and I had to move (turns out they'd been staring through the window at us for like five minutes-creepers) to the barres in the very center of the room (!!) where everyone can see me and the instructor is right there. It was okay, though. She was right behind me and didn't point out anything wrong, so that's nice! I maybe don't hate her as much. Maybe.

Ho Hum
I'm feeling a little un-motivated to go to class tomorrow, because my instructor won't be there. She'll be in California performing, and she's having grad students show a film. I don't want to watch it! I don't know what it is, but I don't. I guess I'll go though, because we have to take notes as a proof of our attendance, and I wouldn't put it past her to put questions from it on the exam. At least I get to wear regular clothes so I can run errands before class! I have some library books that are quite overdue. Maybe I'll work out before (hahahahahahahahaha) since I won't get my dance workout! We'll see...

Not So Bad
I missed (ahem, skipped) class on Monday, so today was extra-hard, but...I wasn't terrible! I certainly don't mean that I was good, but I wasn't any worse than the other girls on our pirouettes, and they've had a full day of practice more than I have, so that's nice.
Then we started a combination, which was glorious. We were all hopping around trying to be graceful, and failing miserably for the most part. But at least it was all of us, and not just me (well, except for the chain spins, that was terrifying for everyone in my path!)!!! Yaaaaay! But my feet hurt ever so much. Is this normal, or are my shoes too small? I don't know.

Blah Stupid Ballet
I hurt and I'm terrible at ballet. We started pirouettes today and we were all wobbly at first. Then everyone else got unwobbly and I didn't. Our instructor laughed at us a whole lot and I hate her. I don't really hate her, I just hate that she laughs at us. And yells at us. She yells. I hate her. I know I said I didn't, but that's just because she's nice when she isn't teaching us. I hope I get better at this soon, or it's going to be an unpleasant semester.
On the other hand, the other girls have started talking to me now, which is nice. So there's that. Blah stupid ballet.

:(
Well, after two classes of actual dance, I think it's safe to say: I'm the worst. It's not that I'm not good at ballet, I just learn the steps a little slower than all the other girls. Yes, all of them. It takes me approximately 1.5 runthroughs more than the others to get the steps, which is not good. Next time, I'll move to the back of the class so I can trudge along with no shame!
Today, my instructor kept cracking up after we finished and saying, "That's so bad!" and since I was the only one who was messing up, she had to mean me. Somehow, I got stuck in the front when we were racing to positions in front of the mirrors. Consequently, I was right next to her. Anyway, I'll just go straight to the back next time so I can learn in peace.
On the other hand, it's pretty cool when I do finally learn it, I look like a balleriiiiina!

First Dance
My poor baby toes hurt. I think the seams on my tights were in the wrong place or something. So anyway, today we started dancing! I wore my leotard and tights under normal clothes so I wouldn't have to wrestle into my tights in front of the other girls. Everyone else did the same thing, and for the same reason, which I thought was funny. Basically squeezing into tights we bought that were already a size too big was pretty traumatic for all of us. Maybe since it happened to all of us, it's normal? We'll say yes.
I was a little nervous about my tattoo being out in the open-I don't much like it anymore, so I usually hide it with my clothes or my hair, but nobody mentioned it. I was right up front, too, so I know they saw it. I'm just glad nobody commented.
First, we did some posture exercises on the floor. It seemed like that went on for a long time. Then we did some Pilates (also to help with posture--Rene doesn't want any slumpy dancers).
After that, we started barre work! Our instructor got all mixed up a few times, so it was confusing figuring out the order in which we were supposed to do the exercises. I just slyly watched the girls on either side of me...if I was wrong, at least I wouldn't be wrong alone!
Then, we got in front of the mirrors for some "court dance". Only after we did court dance did we learn the basic ballet positions (feet only, though she says there are arm ones too). We learned to bow, which was quite elaborate and ridiculous, and thankfully ran out of time before she could make us do it to music! Now my poor baby toes hurt, just in case you forgot.

Ballerina!
I bought my ballet clothes today, and when I sewed my shoes and tried everything on, I felt like a ballerina! That might sound obvious, but I was a little dubious about it. I just want to wear my ballet clothes all day long! That would probably be frowned upon though.

History of Ballet
Today was my second ballet class, and our teacher was there. She seems really nice, I think I'm going to like her. She did tell us not to buy our tights from Walmart unless we shave "down there" because they're too transparent and dance tights are thicker. So that's nice. She did make the boy in the class cover his ears for it, but she gestured rather detailedly down there, so I'm pretty sure he got it. She told him he could wear sweatpants and a t-shirt, but he asked if he could wear a leotard, because he's really excited about it.
Then we took notes on the history of ballet and my professor doesn't know how to pronounce Circe. She butchered it. That's all for today! Monday should be much more exciting. We're starting off with "court dance" so we can learn where the ballet moves come from. Hope there's waltz, I can do that!

Dancer
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always wanted to dance. I danced around my house so much as a child that my mother called me, "Dancer" more often than she called me by my name. We were too poor to afford lessons for me, but now I'm in college. This wonderful university offers dance classes, and I'm taking a beginner ballet class.
My first class, which was today, was pretty disappointing. My instructor is in New York with a show she's been working on, so she just sent a guy to take role and tell us to bring our syllabus on Wednesday. We'll go over it then and learn about the history of dance, which he promised would be our only lecture this semester.
One of the requirements of the course is to attend two dance performances. Ordinarily, I would be pretty excited about that, but the lineup this semester isn't too grand. At least, there's not much I've heard of before, but it's true that the performances could be wonderful anyway. One of the options is at the Orpheum in Memphis, Tennessee (which is the most beautiful building I've ever seen), so maybe I'll try to convince my fiance that it's necessary for my grade that we go together! I doubt he'll go with me, but maybe I can talk him into going with me to one here in our town.
Thursday, we get to buy our dance clothes, and I'm so excited about that! I wish I could get the gorgeous satin pointe shoes, but I won't be ready for those for quite some time. I asked my fiance's sister, who has taken dance since she was tiny, what kind of shoes I should get, and she recommended canvas split-sole shoes. Since they wear out pretty easily, I'll probably pick up two pair for the semester and order more if it looks like I'll need them. We are required to wear black leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. I hope I can get a leotard with 3/4 length sleeves, I think those are the prettiest. The instructor didn't specify what style, but she may do so in class on Wednesday. We can also wear a sheer black skirt, but I've heard that those sort of get in the way, so I think I'll skip that...unless they're really cute. We'll see!
The title of this blog comes from William Butler Yeats: "O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, How can we know the dancer from the dance?" I thought it was a neat quote. Basically here I'll be documenting my experiences as an adult trying to learn the most beautiful art form there is.
